Research on the Transformation Pathways of Archival Documentary Heritage in University Special Collections:
A Case Study of the Hainan Literature Collection at Hainan Normal University Library

Abstract: University special collections constitute a vital component of the archival documentary heritage system. The transformation from "collections" to "heritage" is the result of both contemporary demands and national strategic imperatives. Taking the Hainan Literature Collection of the Library of Hainan Normal University as a case study, this paper develops its argument through four progressive tiers—"why to transform," "how to transform," "readiness analysis for transformation conditions," and "transformation pathways"—grounded in the analytical framework of "resources– stakeholders–institutions." First, it addresses "why to transform" from the perspective of identity reconfiguration of university special collections. Second, it examines "how to transform" by identifying three critical conditions for the shift from "special collections" to "archival documentary heritage." Third, it conducts a readiness analysis of these transformation conditions. Finally, it proposes transformation pathways, including: remediating collection resource gaps by constructing a "strategy + culture" dual‑driven collection system; deepening multi‑stakeholder collaboration by establishing internal‑external synergistic and regularized cooperation mechanisms; and improving institutional safeguards by developing long‑term mechanisms for archival documentary heritage transformation. This study aims to provide a reference for the transformation of university special collections into archival documentary heritage.
